The collection contains chiefly literary compositions written, copied, or collected by various members of the Grenville family, particularly those written by Richard Grenvillle, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos and copied by his daughter-in-law Mary Campbell Grenville, Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos, including manuscripts of his four novels, poetry, and commonplace books.

Having retired from political life in 1830, Richard Grenville, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos spent his time at Stowe attending to his collections of books, pictures, and artifacts and dabbling in writing. His novels The Legend of the House of Yonne, A Tale of Sicily, and The Zitsa were privately published at Stowe, and his novel A Tale of the Civil War was published by Maurice and Clark in London in 1838.
